Long Term Volunteering at Pop Wuj

Pop Wuj Spanish School Guatemala is seeking volunteers to fill several positions in its Community Development Projects. These positions require a working knowledge of Spanish, interest or experience in working with rural communities, and at least a three-month

commitment.  Pop Wuj has partnered with a local NGO, Entremundos, to facilitate the long-term volunteer (intern) application and selection process.   Our long-term volunteer opportunities include a variety of projects and areas of interest.

Projects Coordinator

The Projects Coordinator is responsible for coordinating volunteers and activities related to the various community development projects. These community projects include the medical clinic, family support center, safe stove project, scholarship program, and the greenhouse and reforestation project.

Safe Stove Project Coordinator

The Safe Stove Project works in various communities near Xela.  We are currently building stoves one morning per week.  A coordinator is needed to lead weekly groups in stove construction as well as conduct in-home interviews in order to select future stove recipients.  The coordinator must have intermediate Spanish and a willingness to get their clothes dirty!

Family Support Center Coordinator

The Family Support Center is open to single, working mothers and their children. It is located just outside of Xela, in a small, rural community.  Pop Wuj is looking for a volunteer with an interest in children and education to coordinate different educational activities with the children, as well as to organize volunteers interested in spending time at the Family Support Center.

Greenhouse/Reforestation Coordinator

El Invernadero is Pop Wuj's greenhouse, which has produced tomatoes for sale and various vegetables for the Family Support Center.  This project requires a volunteer with previous experience in greenhouses and education.   The greenhouse coordinator will be responsible for repairing the greenhouse structure, buying materials, fundraising, and general maintenance of the greenhouse.  The volunteer will also coordinate educational activities for the children, youth, and mothers at the Family Support Center, as well as to organize volunteers wishing to spend time at the greenhouse.  The reforestation portion of this project is active in May and June and includes planting tree seedlings on private land.


Medical Coordinator, Pop Wuj Clinic

Duties relating to this volunteer position include scheduling weekly events, clinics, and other daily activities for participants in the Medical Spanish Program at Pop Wuj. These activities and events range from conferences for Spanish students in the Program to outreach activities in the many communities served by the Program. The medical coordinator will also be asked to organize the orientation of Medical Spanish Program participants, as well as coordinating between Pop Wuj administration, volunteers, students, doctors, and the community.
