You can begin your studies at Pop Wuj - Spanish School Guatemala on any Monday (or at any weekday upon request) and stay for as many weeks as you like. However a stay of at least three weeks is recommended in order to take full advantage of our program.
Please note the minimum time commitment for the Medical Spanish, Social Work and Spanish for Teachers program. We recommend you plan your start date for the Medical Spanish, Social Work or Spanish for Teachers program for the 1st or 3rd Monday in each month. With this you will receive your cultural competency lecture during your first week.
Call or e-mail to confirm space, especially during the busiest season (Jan, Feb, Apr, Jun, Jul, Aug). If your requested dates are unavailable, we will notify you promptly and recommend alternative dates.
The registration application should be completed at least three weeks before your desired start date. However we can be flexible and, if authorized, you can register as close as three to four days before your start date. This will provide sufficient time to arrange a teacher and housing for you.
Your application should be accompanied by a non-refundable registration fee of $65 USD for the Spanish Immersion Course. Registration in the Medical Spanish, Social Work and the Spanish for Teachers program is $150 USD.
Please note that the registration fee is not applied toward the tuition. Part of the registration fee will be directly invested by Pop Wuj into our community development projects.
Upon submitting your application, you will be automatically directed to GuatePay, a secure online payment service, to pay your non-refundable registration fee. GuatePay accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. You will receive confirmation emails from GuatePay and Pop Wuj after your application has been processed.

Textbooks and t-shirts can be purchased when you complete your registration. Textbooks are not required to study at Pop Wuj.

Tuition Payments in Guatemala
Your tuition should be paid directly to the school upon arrival in Guatemala. Our preferred of payment is cash in Guatemalan quetzales or U.S. Dollars.
Pop Wuj also accepts credit card payments via GuatePay, a secure online payment system, however there is an additional 8% fee when paying with a credit card. You may want to consider bringing Traveler’s Cheques and changing them in Xela before paying your tuition in cash. Unfortunately Pop Wuj can no longer accept personal or cashier’s checks. The reason that we ask that you not prepay your full tuition is because of the cost and delays involved in transferring money from outside Guatemala.
Changing Money/ATMs in Xela
It is possible to change US dollars to quetzales in the airport and at various locations in Xela. The rate is much better in Xela so we do not recommend that you change much money at the airport. Money changers will not accept old or ripped bills and generally give a better rate for bills of higher denominations (i.e. $50 or $100 are better to change than $5 or $10 bills).
ATMs are easily accessible in Guatemala, however please remember to tell your bank that you will be in Guatemala/traveling. There is a Q2,000 (approx. $265 USD) daily limit on ATM withdrawals. Mastercard is generally more difficult to use, however VISA ATM cards usually work fine. Credit cards are generally accepted in very touristy areas and often charge an 8-10% fee.

After processing your application, we will send you a formal confirmation letter via e-mail, along with more information about the school, how to get there, and what you should bring with you when you come. To avoid any mistakes, please confirm your dates and program again after you have receive the confirmation letter. No classes or activities will be scheduled on these days: New Years Day, January 1; Good Friday (date varies); Labor Day, May 1; Guatemalan Independence Day, September 15; All Saints Day, November 1; and Christmas Day, December 25.
