The Spanish Immersion for Teachers

The Pop Wuj “Spanish for Teachers” Program is designed for elementary and middle school teachers, as well as students and professionals in the educational field interested in Spanish immersion and gaining teaching experience in a Spanish environment. Learn and share education
methods with Guatemalan teachers and teach study techniques to Guatemalan children in urban and rural schools in the highlands of Guatemala.

In the first week, participants attend conferences that cover cultural competencies including the history of Guatemalan education, the social-political history of Guatemala and Latin America, the general history of the country and of Latin America, and the current state of the Guatemalan education system in order to understand the cultural and fundamental philosophy of Guatemala. Student teaching in the public school system starts generally in the second week of the program including observation and/or hands-on practice in an urban or rural classroom.


The Spanish for Teachers program includes:


4h Daily - intensive One-on-One Spanish focused on technical education vocabulary with a teacher specialized in the language

4h Daily - observation and/or hands-on practice in an urban or rural classroom starting the second week

Techniques and methods of teaching, lesson planning, objectives, activities, and evaluations

Lectures targeting cultural competencies for one week that include themes about Guatemala and Latin America, issues pertaining to the culture, economy, education, and history of the country; planning and evaluation

Cultural immersion through a Homestay with a Guatemalan family in a private room with three meals a day, safe drinking water, a warm shower and constant practice of the language

Spanish School Activities (except transportation / entrance fees)


Experience in the school:

Generally, student teaching in the public school system starts in the second week of the program, after the first week of cultural competency, however there can be certain exceptions:


When the level of Spanish of the student is basic and they need to concentrate more time on their language study to improve their level of communication

When, for reasons of space, the student has to wait until the school where they will work is able to offer them a position

When the student decides, for whatever reason, not to participate in the student teaching portion and decides instead only to focus on the theory of the education systems in Guatemala

This Spanish for Teachers program follows Guatemala´s school year and runs from January through September. There is a minimum time commitment of four weeks in this program.  Please note that Guatemalan schools are generally closed for one week at the end of June for their mid-year break.

$200 USD per Week  Currency Converter ?  

One time registration fee $150 USD

The cost of the Spanish for Teachers program and its registration fee is slightly higher than that of the Spanish Immersion Course. Part of the extra money serves to offset the additional costs of cultural conferences, materials, and scheduling. The remainder is put into a fund supporting the Pop Wuj Scholarship Program.

A minimum time commitment of 4 weeks is required
